Course Overview:
This course provides students with fundamental knowledge of operating system concepts, structures, and models. It covers key topics related to process management, memory management, I/O management, file systems, and security. By delving deep into the architecture and components of the Operating Systems, the course intends to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application.
Prerequisite:
- The students must have completed grade 12 or equivalent education.
- Must pass in-house designed entry exam covering basic math, algebra, and calculus (minimum score 60%).
- Students from non-English speaking countries must pass the English Language Proficiency Test.

Learning Outcomes:
- Explain fundamental operating system concepts, including process management, memory management, and file system operations.
- Differentiate between processes, threads, process scheduling, race conditions, and critical sections.
- Identify and manage various types of processes and threads with emphasis on synchronization and parallelism. Apply CPU scheduling algorithms and ensure deadlock.
- Describe and optimize virtual memory systems, allocation strategies, and protection mechanisms. Examine and categorize techniques like caching, paging, segmentation, virtual memory, and thrashing.
- Evaluate and oversee file systems, focusing on file structure, permissions, and access control across multiple operating systems.
- Showcase networking concepts, configure network settings, and master socket programming for enhanced communication in networked settings.
- Clarify device management, troubleshoot network connectivity, and interact with devices and drivers across diverse operating systems.
