The Guru Nanak Institute of Global Studies (GNI) was established in 2021 as a non-profit educational institution shaped by community initiative and a commitment to advancing structured post-secondary education in Canada. Its founding coincided with the commemoration of the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak, whose teachings have historically emphasized equality, ethical responsibility, dialogue, and lifelong learning. These principles continue to inform the Institute’s academic orientation.
GNI was founded by members of the Canadian Sikh community, one of the largest Sikh diasporic communities globally, with the objective of developing an institution capable of supporting rigorous scholarship, interdisciplinary inquiry, and professional education. From the outset, the Institute has sought to situate heritage-based knowledge within contemporary academic and public contexts, emphasizing critical engagement, research-informed teaching, and intellectual independence.
The founding Board of Directors, supported by an Academic Council and External Academic Advisory Board composed of scholars and professionals from Canada and abroad, established governance and academic structures aligned with recognized post-secondary standards. This framework has enabled the Institute to launch certificate and diploma programming while progressively strengthening faculty recruitment, academic policies, research engagement, and institutional quality assurance processes.
GNI’s development has followed a deliberate and incremental institutional trajectory. Through sustained program expansion, academic capacity building, and community engagement, the Institute continues to advance its preparedness for expanded degree-level programming, subject to regulatory approval in British Columbia, and to strengthen the foundations necessary for long-term institutional growth within the Canadian higher education landscape.
