This advanced seminar surveys major theoretical frameworks in the academic study of religion
from the nineteenth century to the present. Students engage classical theorists and contemporary
critical approaches (feminist, postcolonial, critical race, Indigenous, and discourse-oriented
theories) to examine how “religion” is constructed, explained, and contested. The course
emphasizes applying theory to case studies and evaluating the assumptions, limits, and power
dynamics embedded in scholarly models of religion.
