This upper-division course examines the political, military, and ideological transformations of the
Sikh community from the post-Guru period through the Sikh Empire and the British colonial
annexation of Punjab. Through primary and secondary sources, students analyze Sikh sovereignty,
colonial knowledge production, resistance, and the lasting impact of imperial rule on Sikh political
memory, identity, and religious self-understanding.
