This course examines the formative period of Sikh history from the birth of Guru Nanak (1469) to
the passing of Guru Gobind Singh (1708). Students explore the development of Sikh doctrine (Ik
Jot), institutions, scripture, and community identity within shifting South Asian political and
religious contexts. Emphasis is placed on the teachings and historical roles of the ten Sikh Gurus,
the formation of the Guru Granth Sahib, Sikh responses to Mughal authority, and the
establishment of the Khalsa.
