Course Overview:

With this introductory course, students will be able to get an initial theoretical and practical understanding of Gurmat Sangeet with the help of audio-visual course elements. This will enable them to learn about the overall Sikh Music tradition that includes vocal forms, stringed instruments (Tanti saaz), and percussion accompaniments.

  • None

Learning Outcomes:

  • Raags in Sri Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh Scripture.
  • Shabad Keertan forms, styles, trends and tradition.
  • Folk and classical tradition of Sikh music.
  • Music instruments in Gurmat Sangeet.
  • Definitions of Terminologies relevant to Shabad Keertan tradition.

Course Content & Topics:

  1. Basic theoretical introduction, audio visual introduction and recognition of overall Sikh Music tradition, specifically:                                           
    • Raags in Sri Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh Scripture.
    • Shabad Keertan forms/styles/trend/tradition.
    • Folk and classical tradition of Sikh music.
    • Music instruments in Gurmat Sangeet.
  2. Introduction to Terminology
    • Definition of terminologies used in Gurmat Sangeet e.g. Aroh, Avroh, Saptaks,Vadi, Swadi etc.
