Course Overview:
Students learn to use MS Word processor (Word), presentation program (PowerPoint), email (Outlook), a database management system (Access), desktop publishing app (Publisher), and MS Excel spreadsheet package to create and format workbooks (a collection of spreadsheets) to analyze data and make informed business decisions. In addition, they learn to create, edit, format and print workbooks; use mathematical formulas and functions; create and format charts and learn how to create shapes and insert images. Students will also learn to cut, copy, and paste data within worksheets and workbooks.
Prerequisite:
- Basic computer skills such as keyboarding, accessing the internet and using emails.
- The students must have completed grade 12 or equivalent education.
- Students from non-English speaking countries must pass the English Language Proficiency Test.
- English Language Proficiency – Acceptable test scores (IELTS – 6.0, TOEF – 70, PTE – 45, CAEL – 70, CAE – 176, Duolingo – 110, Password – 6.5, and PTE – 61) are acceptable.
Learning Outcomes:
- MS Word ability to:
- Interface and navigate through Word documents.
- Create and format basic documents, including text, paragraphs, and lists.
- Format graphical elements such as images, shapes, and tables.
- Apply proofing tools such as spell check and grammar check, track changes and merge documents.
- Use advanced formatting and layout options, such as styles, templates and sections, to create professional-looking documents.
- Create a table of contents, indexes, and other reference materials.
- PowerPoint ability to:
- Identify names and functions of the PowerPoint interface.
- Create, edit, save, format and print presentations.
- Add graphics to a presentation.
- Create and manipulate simple slide shows with outlines and notes.
- Create slide presentations that include text, graphics, animation, and transitions.
- Use design layouts and templates for presentations.
- Outlook ability to:
- Identify goals for email communication, calendaring, and managing contacts.
- Determine how to organize folders, incoming mail, and templates.
- Create rules, quick steps, and quick parts.
- Use the scheduling assistant.

- Create and assign tasks and to-do activities.
- Access ability to:
- Identify the terminology and functions common to most database management systems.
- Identify the qualities of valuable information.

- Complete the necessary preparations for print and broadcast before starting the process of creating a graphic design.

- Examine spreadsheet concepts and explore the Microsoft Office Excel environment.
