Nomination Criteria

GNI is introducing the “Sikh of the Year” award to recognize and honour individuals of Sikh heritage who have made significant contributions in their respective fields, raising the profile of the Sikh community on an international level. This award celebrates excellence, leadership, and service, inspiring others to follow in their footsteps.

Eligibility Criteria:

  1. Sikh Identity: Nominees must identify as Sikh and demonstrate adherence to Sikh values
    and principles.
  2. International Impact: Nominees’ achievements must have significantly impacted the
    international stage, contributing to the global recognition of the Sikh community.
  3. Excellence in Field: Nominees must exhibit exceptional performance and innovation in
    their field, earning respect and recognition from peers and the broader community.
  4. Community Service: Nominees must have a proven track record of contributing to the
    Sikh community through service, leadership, or mentorship.
  5. Ethical Conduct: Nominees must maintain a high standard of ethical conduct, integrity,
    and professionalism.

Specific Criteria for Academia:

  1. Academic Credentials: Advanced degrees or professional qualifications in their field.
  2. Research Contributions: A significant body of published research contributing to the
    advancement of knowledge.
  3. Teaching Excellence: Commitment to excellence in teaching and student mentorship.
  4. Awards and Recognitions: Notable awards, grants, or recognitions from academic
    institutions or professional organizations.
  5. Leadership in Academia: Leadership roles within academic or research institutions.

For Other Fields (e.g., Business, Arts, Science, Technology, Social Justice):

  1. Professional Achievements: A distinguished career with notable achievements.
  2. Innovation and Impact: Introduction of innovative ideas, products, or practices with
    significant societal impact.
  3. Recognition and Awards: National or international awards and recognitions.
  4. Advocacy and Influence: Advocacy for the Sikh community and raising awareness of
    Sikh values and issues.
  5. Mentorship and Development: Active mentorship and support for future leaders in their field.

Documentation Required:

  1. Nomination Form: Completed nomination form detailing the nominee’s achievements and impact.
  2. Letters of Support: At least three letters of support from peers, colleagues, or community leaders.
  3. Evidence of Achievements: Documentation of achievements, such as published works, awards, or media coverage.
  4. Personal Statement: A personal statement from the nominee outlining their journey, contributions, and future aspirations.

Nomination Process:

  1. Submission: Nominations must be submitted by August 7, 2024, to sea@gurunanakinstitute.ca or mailed to #2008-7445 132 Street, Surrey, B.C. V3W 1J8
  2. Review: An independent committee will review all nominations and evaluate them based on the outlined criteria.
  3. Selection: The selection committee will recommend finalists to the GNI board for the final decision.
  4. Announcement: The award recipient will be announced at the annual International Sikh Research Summit dinner on September 28, 2024.
