Course Overview:
This course explores broad social justice issues in Canada through the lens of Sikh ethos. Students will examine issues of colonialism, Indigenous land dispossession, immigration, national belonging, security and surveillance, anti-Black racism and Black Lives Matter, labour and race, gender differentials and sexual identity, multiculturalism, and religious accommodations, caste inequities, and building community across differences.
Prerequisite:
- Minimum Grade 12 or equivalent
Learning Outcomes:
- A solid understanding of how the Sikh ethos is connected to social justice.
- Knowledge of past and present Sikh diaspora in Canada.
- Understanding of how social justice values rooted in Sikhi shape the experience of Sikhs and shape relations with Indigenous, Black, and marginalized communities.
- Understanding of how social justice can be resisted and challenged by drawing on Sikh ethos.
- Development of critical thinking, analytical, writing, and research skills.

- Issues of Colonialism today: Sikhs on Indigenous lands
- The issue of imperial citizenship and historical immigration racism: the 1914 journey of Guru Nanak Jahaz (Komagata Maru)
- Issues of Canadian belonging and complicity in Indigenous dispossession
- Issues of security and surveillance: revolutionary hopes of the Gadar (gdr) Party
- Seeking economic and labour justice
- Issues of racism, religious accommodations, and multiculturalism
- Calls for gender and sexual justice
- Sikhi and Movements for Black Lives
- Issues of caste exclusions and caste abolition
- Sikh values of community across differences
- Sikh diaspora challenges and solutions in seeking social justice
